Bright and bold boys bedroom

The brief

Turn a large guest bedroom with an en-suite bathroom into a bright and colourful, modern interior design for a growing boy moving from his old, smaller nursery room.

The solution

The only prerequisite from the 6-year-old ‘client’ was ‘I’d like blue and I like planes and trains’. Working with this, a chalky, blue was chosen to represent the sky, which ensured that the room retained its sense of space and light. Denim blue added contrast, while accents of ochre yellow brought energy and warmth in the bold lamps and Eames-style chair.

A versatile high sleeper bed was chosen, with a useful day bed for sleepovers and a sofa for chilling out. The integrated under-bed desk was added for Lego projects and future study. The full-size single-bed sleeping area will ensure many years of growth and comfort.

A scaled-down wardrobe and drawers in smooth white were sourced from a Scandinavian manufacturer to match the UK-made bed. The wardrobe can be adjusted and re-configured as the child grows. Wood tones on furniture legs and picture frames add warmth to the room.

Large graphic transport images were framed, which, combined with curtains in denim Lohko fabric from Scion add punch to the room.

The bathroom was given a small update continuing the ochre yellow from the bedroom, but combining it with sleek grey and black.

Overall the room has a light, bright and warm Scandinavian edge.
