Cool and contemporary sitting room

The brief

Work with the Victorian features, but add a modernist, luxury feel to this living room interior design. Keep it calm and cosy, but add some dashes of colour.

The solution

The existing orange-toned laminate floor was removed and replaced with a much lighter engineered oak with a warm tone that gives a more contemporary feel and makes the room feel larger.

A base palette of two shades of warm grey accentuates features such as the fireplace, floating shelving and feature art wall. Colour is added using accessories in rich peacock blue and paprika, with added geometric patterns from the Margo Selby cushions. Velvet is used on soft furnishings to add a luxe feel.

Large ‘Tuxedo’ style sofas add a modern, smart, geometric and structured feel to the space. Mirrored with welded raw steel coffee tables with concrete-style resin tops.

Curves are added to break up the hard edges using a large mid-century arc-style lamp and curved swivel chair in peacock blue. The iconic criss-cross saucer bubble pendant ceiling shade is a striking addition to the room.

Metal pieces in black, such as the floor lamp, picture frames, mirror, candle holders and plant stand, tie the room together and add sophistication.

A key feature in a room can often add the wow factor. In this case a piece of abstract photographic fashion art, with a striking image and fluro colour.
