Elegant and modern hallway

The brief

Hallway interior design has a huge opportunity to create an immediate impact. This brief was to update a Victorian hallway, stairs and landing design over three floors whilst retaining as much light as possible.

The solution

This elegant hallway needed upgrading and modernisation. The ground floor marmoleum flooring needed replacing, the basic white radiator just didn’t fit in, and the pale colour scheme was lacking the depth needed for the period. A light and bright scheme gave a much-needed injection of definition and contrast, accentuating the high ceilings and maintaining light.

At ground level, light engineered oak in wide planks, replaced the old flooring, visually extending the hallway as you open the front door. The white radiator was replaced with a dark grey column radiator which has now become a feature.

A sleek and elegant oak herringbone cabinet imported from Denmark is an uber-contemporary piece, with a bell-style lamp and matching pendant adding subtle light.

Oversized abstract art takes advantage of the high ceilings and large mirrors add to the sense of space. The woven black and white rug and plants soften the space.

To ensure the space retains light, two colours are used. Dulux Heritage Rosemary leaf to add colour depth, plus a Heritage light grey to reflect light.

Upstairs an old pine dresser was replaced with a modern herringbone patterned sideboard. Cloud-like, oversized ribbon light fittings draw the eye up to the top floors. Black and white accessories, a large black pill-shaped mirror and a striking black lamp with glass ball shades add contrast. Curtains were replaced with a contemporary blind in an abstract scribble fabric.
