Three of the best online tile shops

Creating a luxe or chic interior design look for your shower room? Looking for contemporary tiles for your kitchen design? Here’s my pick of some of the best online tile shops to source interior design trends for bathrooms or tiles for kitchens. The list is in alphabetical order and not in preference.

Boutique Stone
4.9 on Trustpilot

This family business describes itself as a “Close-knit team with a passion for stone”.

The site has a good range of traditional marble (inc. mosaics) and travertine. Some patterned tiles, but not a huge range. They do have plenty of the current interiors favourite, terrazzo in varying colours and intensity.

Boutique Stone imports their ranges directly and offers a more handpicked and curated approach to their collections, hence a more limited, but stylish selection of tiles.

All tiles are organised into collections such as ‘Natural stone’ and ‘Porcelain’ on the Boutique Stone website. Click on a product and all the info is there including in many cases some good images of the tiles in situ. Samples are free, you just need to pay postage.

If you need advice or help, you can call, email or chat, and the details are easy to find. For general queries there’s an FAQ section, although some of these sections were empty when I visited, due to be added to.

There’s a good Instagram account too for inspiration.

Could be seen as limited compared to others, but more curated. All tiles are on-trend examples, carefully picked.

My Pick
£53.99 per square metre

Terrazzo is a key trend at the moment and Boutique Stone has a good choice. The Ravello Terrazzo Beige is a terrazzo effect tile available in 800 x 800, suitable for walls and floors. Large white realistic chips on a backdrop of beige, ivory, linen, and champagne tones. It’s a subtle entry into terrazzo.

My experience

I’ve only ordered samples so far; two types of terrazzo and a funky cube tile. They arrived within a few days. All in perfect condition and well packaged.

Mandarin Stone
4.1 on Trustpilot

Mandarin Stone started 30 years ago as a small business. They say they have an overriding passion for natural stone, but the collection has grown considerably over the years, including the  introduction of man-made porcelain tiles. It’s a family-run business based in the rolling hills of Monmouthshire, Wales.

Their aim  is to provide the best possible advice to customers in combination with competitive pricing.

They stock a good range of on-trend marble, terrazzo, brick/metro style tiles, gloss ceramic, Kit Kat style mosaics, natural stone, slate, limestone, and even stone basins and bathroom cabinets. There’s also a really good selection of modern patterns and geometrics.

The website is easily navigated, although there aren’t individual menu items at the top of the page, you have to use a full bleed menu page, which incorporates dropdowns. The menu system is broken down in to ‘Natural Stone”, ‘Porcelain and Ceramic’, ‘Patterned and Decorative’ etc. – then sub-categories such as ‘wood effect’, ‘concrete effect’ etc.

There’s an Instagram feed on home page, full of inspiration and well-photographed images of the products in situ. The site also has a good blog with inspiration, real case studies, ideas and tips. There’s also a useful advice section, covering geological rock types, glossary of terms, FAQs, maintenance etc.

You can order 4 samples for free (no postage to pay), if you want more then you just pay postage.

Really good range of quality products. Mixed pricing levels from premium products, to design-led products that are more reasonable on the pocket.

My Pick
£203.47 per square metre

Herringbone tile in timeless Carrara marble. You need a good budget for this, but it will look amazing and offer a chic finish for either bathroom or kitchen splashbacks. If using in a bathroom, these could be combined with larger marble slabs, using these mosaic tiles as a feature wall.

My experience

I’ve only ordered samples so far; cement-style porcelain and some brick-style matt tiles. All arrived in perfect condition, with no chips or breakages.

Porcelain Superstore
3.3 on Trustpilot

Their website states “We make tile shopping easy with curated designs, free samples and premium tiles delivered to your door”. Bigger range than some, but still smaller compared to some as they are handpicked which I like. I’d rather have quality and design over quantity.

They stock a very wide range in many shapes, colours, finishes and prices. It looks like they are quite careful in their selection process as all the tiles are on-trend in colour, shape and finish. Their range also includes outdoor tiles.

Lots of glossy, handmade looking tiles, in addition to patterns, terrazzo, Victorian, marble style and the current favourite Kit Kat style.

The tiles are organised in sections such as ‘Bathroom tiles’, Kitchen tiles’ but also ‘Crackle glaze’ ‘Handmade’ etc. obviously there is some crossover here, so things get repeated.

It’s really easy to use filters by colour, shape finish style, to find exactly what you need. Then once you click on a tile, the page is really well laid out, with extra images, close-ups, tiles in situ on some occasions, and all the technical info you will need. At the bottom of each page are reviews on each tile which is handy, although quite a few mention sample orders only.

‘Free samples’ really does mean free on the Porcelain Superstore, you don’t even need to pay postage.

If you need to discuss anything, there’s a real phone number and email address to contact them. Plus there’s an extensive blog with hints, tips and inspiration, and a good Instagram account that’s updated every few days.

A really good range of tiles in all current styles. Not too many that it takes hours to search, and not too few that you can’t find what you are looking for.

My Pick
£18.90 per sheet

Bang on-trend Kit Kat style in three colours. A great choice for feature walls in the kitchen or bathroom. Sleek and contemporary, hang vertically. Speckled finish with a slightly concave surface.

My experience

I’ve only ordered samples so far; 4 brick-style tiles in various colours and finishes. All arrived really promptly and in reasonable condition. They were well packaged but a couple of the larger tiles had chips out of them on the back.
